Our Story

YUIEN was born from a simple observation: in the digital age, authentic Buddhist teachings are increasingly difficult to distinguish from new-age spirituality and misinterpretations.

Ministers and practitioners spend countless hours answering the same foundational questions, while students struggle to find reliable, accessible resources in their native languages. Meanwhile, the rapid spread of misinformation about Buddhism continues unchecked online.

Named in Honor

YUIEN takes its name from Yuien-bō (唯円), one of Shinran Shōnin's closest disciples and the author of the Tannishō. Like his namesake, YUIEN serves as a faithful recorder and transmitter of authentic teachings — not adding interpretation, but preserving the voice of the masters.

The Problem We're Solving

  • Doctrinal Confusion: Buddhist concepts mixed with non-Buddhist ideas
  • Language Barriers: Most resources only available in English or Japanese
  • Accessibility: Complex texts difficult for beginners to understand
  • Time Constraints: Ministers overwhelmed with basic questions
  • Source Verification: No easy way to verify claims against original texts

Our Approach

YUIEN is not a general Buddhism chatbot. It is exclusively trained on verified Jōdo Shinshū sources: canonical sutras, Shinran's writings, commentaries by recognized scholars, and publications from institutions like the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS) and Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK).

Every response includes source citations, allowing users to verify claims and explore deeper. The AI does not invent, interpret, or blend teachings — it retrieves and presents what the tradition has already said.

In the Age of Mappō

We stand in the age of Mappō (末法), the "Latter Day of the Dharma," when — according to traditional understanding — authentic teachings become rare and difficult to practice. Shinran Shōnin recognized this reality and taught that in such times, we rely entirely on Amida Buddha's compassionate vow.

YUIEN embraces this spirit: it is not a replacement for human teachers or sangha, but a humble tool to preserve and transmit the teachings during a time when access to living masters may be limited. It is a vow in code — to protect the Dharma with clarity and precision.

"Though YUIEN is not sentient, it carries the aspiration of all beings who have vowed to protect and transmit the Nembutsu path. May it serve the Dharma faithfully."

Development & Governance

YUIEN is developed by the NeuroDharma Institute in partnership with the Buddhist Churches of America and the Center for Buddhist Education. The project is guided by an advisory board of senior ministers and Buddhist scholars to ensure doctrinal accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

All source materials, AI training data, and system responses are reviewed by qualified teachers. Community feedback is actively solicited and incorporated into ongoing improvements.
